BAKblade VS Mangroomer (In Details)
Both shavers offer an easy solution that enables you to shave your hairy back yourself without asking others for help or using painful waxing.
But, the comparison between Bakblade and Mangroomer is a comparison between 2 things from different planets.
Bakblade is a manual back shaver that utilizes traditional razor blades to do the task. That means it cuts the hair down to the skin level giving you the closest shave.
Mangrommer is an electric back shaver that uses a trimmer head to cut the back hair to the minimal length and another foil head to clean up the remaining stubble.
Now, we are going to compare the best models of each brand against the features that matter.
For BAKblade, we chose BAKblade 2.0 Elite Plus (current model) to be the best model among the whole range.
For Mangrommer, the choice was much harder. The PLATINUM PRO is the Mangroomer’s top-of-the-line and most recent edition. Yet, there was a remarkable decline in the quality control of Mangroomer products in the last couple of years. The MANGROOMER Ultimate Pro is the best version I’ve tried yet.
Brand vs Brand
BAKBLADE Body Grooming (BBG) is an American male grooming company that specializes in back shaving. It was established in 2013 by Matt Dryfhout and Angelina Dryfhout. The company is based in Chicago, IL.
BAKBLADE Body Grooming Co sells its products in Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Uk. In 2018, the company introduced its products to Bed Bath & Beyond retail stores.
One interesting fact about the company is that it donates a portion of its shaver sales to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Aside from the back shavers, the company has a set of manscaping accessories. Here are some examples:
- BODBARBER 11-in-1 KIT for groin, body hair, beard, nose, and ear.
- Leather travel bag
- BODBLADE Precision Blade 6 Pak for handling the hair of the hard-to-reach areas like the nipples area.
- BODWIPES 2-PAK: non-alcoholic wipes that contain Aloe vera and vitamin E.
- SENSITIVE SHAVE GEL 2PAK
On the other hand, Mangroomer is a personal grooming brand. It was founded in 2006 by Brett Marut. He has invented the Mangroomer back shaver to get rid of the embarrassment he felt every time during waxing his back hair at a females’ salon.
The Mangroomer back hair shavers have the lion’s share of the company revenue. Yet, the company has a wide range of self-care products like:
- PRO ESSENTIAL NOSE AND EAR HAIR TRIMMER
- 2.0 PROFESSIONAL BODY GROOMER AND TRIMMER
- ULTIMATE PRO “MANTRIMMER” BEARD AND STUBBLE TRIMMER
- SCRUFF SCULPTOR® PRO WITH WHISKER BELLY
- PROFESSIONAL IONIC HAIR DRYER FOR MEN
- FLUSHABLE MOIST MAN WIPES
- LITHIUM MAX PLUS+ BODY GROOMER AND BODY TRIMMER
- All Ladygroomer Products
Efficiency and Speed of the operation
Here we measure and how quick the shaving session is. Blade width and shaving technique are the main determining factors here.
Head Width
The wider the shaver head, the more surface area it could cover. That means that you would need fewer strokes to get a clean-shaven back and as a result, less time.
BAKblade 2.0 Elite Plus’s head (3.375 inches) is wider than the Mangroomer trimming head (1.8 inches) and the Mangroomer foil head (1.5 inches). So, you can shave your back faster with the Bakblade 2.0.
Technique
The Mangrommer comes with two shaving heads. So, the back shaving process consists of two steps.
In the first step, you need to start with the trimmer head to cut the hair to a shorter length. Then, you move to the Foil Body Groomer Bi-Directional Head to handle shorter hair.
In contrast, you need to go over your back hair only one time with the BAKblade 2.0 to get a close shave.
Takeaway: It took me about 5 minutes to get a smooth back with BAKblade 2.0 Elite Plus while I cleared the hair on my back in about 11 minutes with the Mangrommer Ultimate Pro.
Winner: the BAKblade 2.0 Elite Plus
Coverage of all back sections
A good back hair must have an all-over-reach to all your back sections, especially the hardest parts like the middle and lower sections of the back. So, you can get a clean back without any missed spots or left patches.
Handle length, shaver design and head flexibility are the factors that determine the reach and range of motion of any given back shaver.
Handle length
A longer handle, unsurprisingly, offers better reachability to all your back parts especially if you’re a bigger guy or overweight.
While the BAKblade 2.0 Elite Plus handle is 18 inches long ( when unfolded), the Ultimate Pro is only 14.2 inches.
Theoretically, the 2.0 Elite Plus has more coverage as it has a longer handle. Yet, this is not the truth as there are other two important factors that we must take in our consideration.
Let’s discuss these factors to get a clear understanding.
Design
The handle in the Bakblade 2.0 has an S-shaped curvature. That’s why many men think the Bakblade 1.0’s handle is longer. Meanwhile, the handle of the 1.0 is only 17 inches long.
The problem with that curvature is that there are some spots where the handle touches your back leaving the blades hanging in the air or barely touching your skin. So, the blades wouldn’t apply the needed pressure during the pull. Then, you need to make more swipes over this spot repeatedly or improvise some weird angles to overcome this flaw.
To be clear, this is not a problem for an average guy. But if you’re a muscular guy, you will encounter this issue.
My suggestion for the manufacturer is to increase the handle length and allow the handle to lock in multiple angles.
On the other side, the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro has an extendable handle with a 135-degree opening. Moreover, the Pro XL extension lock button enables you to adjust the handle length and lock it in at the optimal shaving angle.
As a result, you can reach the trickiest spots across your back to get butter smooth skin without any left patches.
Head flexibility
A pivoting head can follow the contours and the crannies of your back to ensure you get a smooth, thorough shave.
The Bakblade 2.0 Elite Plus has a fixed head. As the shaving head can’t swivel, you end up using only one of the three blades.
The attachment heads of the Ultimate Pro have shock absorber flex necks. So, these heads can maneuver smoothly through your body contours.
Takeaway: Both back shavers have great reachability for an average guy. Yet, the Mangrommer Ultimate Pro outperforms the Bakblade 2.0 Elite Plus with bodybuilders and large dudes.
Winner: the Mangrommer Ultimate Pro
Closeness of shave
The 2.0 Elite Plus back hair shaver uses 3 blade cartridges ( the 2.0 version has only 2) while the ULTIMATE PRO back shaver uses a foil razor to give you a close shave.
It’s a no-brainer that the safety razor delivers a closer shave compared to the foil razor.
For all the furry friends right there, both back hair removers perform equally great on thick and coarse hair.
The Ultimate Pro Do-It-yourself back shaver features a power burst mode. This mode gives you extra power to tame the thick back hair.
Winner: the BAKblade 2.0 Elite Plus
Safety and comfort of shaving
The 2.0 Elite Plus boasts patented DRYglide blades. This shaving technology implies protecting the blade by a couple of guards to manage the amount of skin delivered to the blade in every shaving stroke.
So the Bakblade 2.0 Elite plus offers a high safety margin with minimal risk of cuts or nicks.
Moving to its contender, the Ultimate Pro electric back shaver provides a nick-free experience. You would barely have scratches or red marks if you used it aggressively.
Both back shavers provide a smooth shaving experience without pulls or tugs. But, you might experience razor burn and skin irritation if this is your first time using a back hair shaver until you get hang of it.
If you have sensitive skin, it’s advisable to stick to wet shaving with shaving cream or gel. This would decrease the incidence of irritation and razor bumps.
It’s worth mentioning that the Mangroomer back shaver is a tad better for people with sensitive skin.

Convenience
In this section of our Bakblade vs Mangroomer comparison, we are going to review every feature that makes the back shaving operation easier.
Wet/Dry Shaving
The two back hair shavers are waterproof as their manufacturers state. So, you can use them for a dry shave or a wet shave in the shower according to your personal preference.
Yet, Some men complained about the waterproofing of the Mangroomer.
Wet shaving helps you to get a smooth shave and increases the shave longevity as you get a closer shave. It’s also your best choice if you suffer from skin sensitivity or ingrown hair.
Winner: the Bakblade 2.0 Elite Plus
Ergonomic handle
Bakblade 2.0 Elite plus features a rubber-injected handle that feels great in your hands. The handle includes a push-button, so you can easily fold the manual back shaver and store it.
The Mangrommer Ultimate Pro electric shaver features an extendable handle that locks in at various angles for maximum reach. The plastic handle is also rubberized to give you a comfortable and secure grip.
Winner: tie
Versatility
Each back shaver can be used as a body groomer. They work great on your torso area to shave your body hair. You can use them to get a clean shave on your chest hair, shoulders, stomach, and arm hair.
You can even use them to trim your leg hair if you have a stiff back or a shoulder injury.
It’s not advisable to use these shavers to manscape your pubic area and sensitive parts as they are too aggressive to do the task safely.
Winner: tie
Add-ons
The 2.0 Elite Plus back shaver comes with a suction cup to hang the shaver in your bathroom. Yet, this mount needs some improvements in terms of quality as it’s a bit small to support the weight of the shaver. So, it might fall repeatedly.
Another feature I like is that the Bakblade comes with a detachable exfoliating brush to exfoliate the hard-to-reach areas.
On the other hand, the Ultimate Pro comes with a lithium-ion battery that takes 6-8 hours to be fully charged. That means you might need to leave the shaver on the charger overnight to use it.
This waiting time is frustrating to some extent. That being said, the new models of Mangroomer like the Lithium Max Plus and Platinium Pro have an advanced battery that lasts 5x longer.
The Ultimate Pro electric back shaver has a charging indicator that notifies you when the battery is dead (red light) or upon finishing (green light).
Winner: the Bakblade 2.0 Elite Plus
Cost
The difference in the cost of ownership for the two back shavers is neglectable
While the Mangrommer is a one-time purchase, the Bakblade 2.0 DIY has a recurrent cost of the replacement blades.
The 2.0 Elite Plus comes with 3 sharp blades that are sufficient to give you 5-7 shaves. Then, you will need to replace the blade cartridge.
Unlike the Bro shaver (another manual back shaver), the Bakblade 2.0 uses its proprietary blades. That means you can not buy any cheap, standard double edge razors as they would not fit.
The problem is the replacement blades are a little expensive and will cost you about a quarter of the shaver’s initial price.
The Mangroomer DIY back shaver will roughly last for 3-4 years which is its battery life.
Winner: the Mangrommer Ultimate Pro
Final Verdict: Bakblade or Mangroomer?
This battle has no absolute winner or loser. Both back shavers provide great performance and will get the job done perfectly.
I’m slightly inclined towards the Bakblade Elite Plus 2.0 as it gives me a super clean back with adequate reach to all my back parts. I don’t have to wait for charging or do double work. The whole operation is smooth, hassle-free, and straightforward.
Yet, if you have skin sensitivity or are concerned about the refills’ recurring fees, the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro is your best bet.
More Back Grooming coverage
I’m really passionate about shaving and grooming. I shave my friends’ hair as a hobby and totally enjoying my time writing about shavers and razors. My main job? Ok, I’m a pharmacist!
