The Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 was first released on May 06, 2021. Since this date, there are plenty of unanswered questions that pop up in the male grooming community.
Is Manscaped 4.0 worth it? Is Manscaped reliable? Will it cut my balls? Will the Lawn Mower 4.0 pull or snag my pubic hair?

I bought the trimmer and tried it for two weeks to give you an authentic review that you can trust as every review I found was sponsored.

Manscaped 4.0 review (At A Glance)
If you have no time to read our in-depth Manscaped 4.0 review, here is the summary.
Can I get a close cut with the Manscaped 4.0?
The newer device trims evenly and leaves very short stubble. So, if you need to go bald, you should use a safety razor or a straight razor to clean up the remaining stubble.
Will it pull or snag my hair?
No, the Manscaped 4.0 is considered one of the safest ball trimmers. So there are no pulls, snags, or bites. Yet, if you are not careful, you’re most likely to cut yourself.
Is the Lawn Mower 4.0 waterproof?
Yes, the Lawn Mower 4.0 is 100% waterproof. It’s IPX7 rated and its waterproofing is stronger than the one found in Lawn Mower 3.0. So, you can use it in the shower without worrying about damage.
Do I need to upgrade to the Lawn Mower 4.0?
If you own the Lawn Mower 2.0 or 3.0 and have a battery decay, overheating, waterproofing, or accidental powering issue, an upgrade is favorable as the newer trimmer solves these problems. If having nicks or cuts is your concern, then I don’t recommend you to upgrade as the Manscaped 4.0 has almost the same performance.
Can I use this trimmer on my beard?
Yes, you can use the 4.0 for mild tasks like detailing your sideburns or cleaning up your cheeks. Yet, it’s not advised to be your main beard trimmer as it won’t deliver the closest shave. It’s also not the best option for men with coarse hair.

Manscaped 4.0 vs 3.0
When it comes down to the Lawn Mower 3.0 vs 4.0, it seems that Manscaped is entirely aware of all the Lawn Mower 3.0 issues and the company tried to avoid them in the new edition.
While the Manscaped 4.0 has many upgrades, it inherited plenty of features from the Lawn Mower 3.0.
What didn’t change?
- The same battery size with a 90 minutes runtime.
- The same motor speed (7000 RPM)
- The same ceramic blade.
- The same waterproof rating. Yet, the Lawn Mower 4.0 has a nice improvement in real use.
- The same light power.
What’s the difference between Lawn Mower 4.0 and 3.0?
- The look: While the Lawn Mower 3.0 is all matte, the Manscaped 4.0 is a mix of glossy and matte black. The fourth-generation edition has a new logo on the back of it.
- Wireless charging system: You can charge the Manscaped 4.0 wirelessly by the wireless dock and Type-C USB. The Manscaped 3.0 has ports and uses wired charging.
- overcharging and over-discharging protection circuit; The Manscaped 4.0’s battery has this feature to handle the battery degradation issue that was common with the Manscaped 3.0.
- Power Indicator: The Manscaped 4.0 has a power status indicator that tells you exactly the battery charging level (33%, 66%, 100%). The Manscaped 3.0 has only blinking LEDs that notify you that the battery is dead.
- Travel lock: Manscaped 4.0 has a travel lock to prevent the unit from turning on itself randomly. Manscaped 3.0 hasn’t.
- The number of guards: The Lawn Mower 4.0 comes with 2 guards (3-6 mm, 10-13 mm), while the Lawn Mower 3.0 has only one ( 2-3.5mm).
- Controllable LED Spotlight: You can turn on/off the LED light in the Manscaped 4.0 while in the Manscaped 3.0, you can’t.
- Weight: The 4.0 is a bit heavier.
- Waterproofing: The 4.0 is better.
- Overheating problem: The 4.0 doesn’t heat up during use, while the 3.0 used to get hot.

Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 review ( In Details)
Here is an extensive breakdown of the fourth generation of Manscaped, the Manscaped 4.0. This deep review will help you to decide whether the Manscaped 4.0 is reliable or not.
Performance
Blades, motor, and batteries are the deciding factors in measuring the performance of the fourth-generation trimmer, Manscaped 4.0.
There is no difference in those three components in the newer Mancaaped 4.0 compared to Manscaped 3.0 trimmer. So, the performance and closeness of Manscaped 4.0 are almost the same.
Ceramic Blades
The Manscaped 4.0 comes equipped with replaceable ceramic blades. There is no change in the blades. These are the same blades that you can find in Manscaped 2.0 and 3.0
The shift from using stainless steel to ceramic in body hair trimmers is trending in the personal grooming industry.
So, how do ceramic blades compare to stainless steel blades?
Ceramic is better than stainless steel in almost every aspect. Ceramic is harder than stainless steel. This means ceramic blades are sharper if they have been heat-treated correctly.
The net result is that you get faster and safer trims. Shaving with dull blades is a recipe for getting bloody balls.
Besides, ceramic blades can keep their edge for a longer time. This saves you some money as you don’t need to change your blades more often
Over long periods of usage, ceramic blades remain 75% cooler than stainless steel. This prevents the blades from heating up during long trimming sessions. Then, you get more comfortable shaves without irritating your sensitive areas.
Also, ceramic blades are more hygienic as they prevent bacteria from sticking to their surface.
Finally, they are more rust-resistant making them more durable.
In Manscaped 4.0, ceramic blades boast SkinSafe® technology to minimize nicks and cuts. Simply, there’s a gap between the fixed and moving blade and every blade has small teeth with rounded ends. Also, the sharpness of ceramic reduces pulls and yanking.
Unfortunately, improving safety deteriorates the closeness of shaving as a side effect. This means that you can’t get clean-shaven balls with Manscaped 4.0 trimmer (or any pubic hair trimmer that prioritizes safety).
The Manscaped 4.0 pubic trimmer leaves pretty short stubble. It works best on flat surfaces like the area above the shaft. In rounded loose skin, like the sack skin, the trimmer has above-average performance. So, it might need multiple strokes sometimes to remove the hair.
If you prefer bare balls look, you need to use a manual razor or any other hair removal method (i.e, waxing or depilatories) to clean them up after using the groin trimmer.
In short: The blades of the Lawn Mower 4.0 are hygienic, more durable, and relatively safe. Yet, they don’t cut the hair down to the skin.
Motor
The motor power determines the closeness of shaving and the speed of the operation. The Manscaped 4.0 electric trimmer has a 7,000 RPM motor.
This amount of power is sufficient to rapidly tackle the curly and thick hair in your pubic area. The high speed ensures that there’s no pulling or tugging to your pubic hair.
Quietness is another vital feature when shaving or trimming your pubes. you don’t need everyone to know what you’re up to. The motor of the Lawn Mower 4.0 sports QuietStroke™ technology that makes it incredibly quiet.
During the two weeks of usage, I didn’t face any blade overheating problems with the Manscaped 4.0. This was a common downside in the Lawn Mower 2.0 and 3.0 models. Yet, I’ll do further investigation and update this after 6 months of usage.
The absence of this issue ensures you get a comfortable experience over long sessions without hurting your testicles and your male genitals. It also reduces the risk of irritation, razor burn, and ingrown hair in men with sensitive skin.
In short: The motor power is adequate to trim coarse and longer hairs quietly and without overheating.

Battery
The battery runtime and level of charge are another crucial factors in removing unwanted hair efficiently and safely.
Your crotch trimmer’s battery must be fully charged or at least above 50% level before committing to any men’s grooming task. You will experience pulls and yanking with a drained battery.
The Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 features a 600mA li-ion battery that can be recharged by a wireless charging dock. The battery takes about 5 hours to be fully charged with a 90 minutes runtime.
The battery decay was a widespread issue with the Manscaped Lawn Mower 3.0 as the battery health deteriorates over extended use.
That being said, I can’t be sure whether this problem continues to appear with the fourth generation Manscaped trimmer or not as it needs more time to judge. Yet, the newer battery features an overcharging and over-discharging protection circuit. So, it’s supposed for this defect to disappear.
The addition of the tri-level power indicator is a serious improvement to the Manscaped 4.0. The led indicator lights up automatically once you turn on your shaver. It’s divided into 3 parts. Every part represents a 33% increment in the power level. So, you can easily detect your battery status.
In short: The Manscaped 4.0 battery shows a real improvement compared to the Lawn Mower 3.0. Here are these upgrades.
- An overcharging and over-discharging protection circuit for extended battery life.
- The inclusion of the power indicator.
Safety & Convenience
Now, we will evaluate the safety, durability, and ease of use of the newer Manscaped machine.
Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 guard
The newer manscaper comes with 2 adjustable trimmer guards. They Provide 4 different hair lengths from size 1 to size 4 (3-6 mm, 10-13 mm).
It’s recommended to attach the trimmer guard when shaving your balls to avoid cuts and nicks.
You can use these attachments to shape your pubic hair according to your preferred manscaping style. Here are some examples of whether you want a more masculine look or like to go hairless.
This feature also opens up the possibilities for the Lawn Mower 4.0 to be used as a body groomer or even a beard trimmer. You can use this electric shaver as a body trimmer to tame your legs, armpits, happy trail, and chest hair.
Aside from grooming tasks, you can utilize Manscaped 4.0 to cut your facial hair and maintain your beard. The trimmer works best on short beards due to power limitations.
This trimmer suffers from heavy beards. So, it’s not the best choice if you have a tough beard.
Bear in mind that Manscape 4.0 won’t give you a clean shave. It barely gives you a 5 O’clock shadow.
The optimal use for this trimmer is to clean up the stray hairs on your cheeks and detail the sideburns and neckline.
Another good use for bald men is to buzz their heads with the Lawn Mower 4.0 daily to maintain the bald look.
In short, the comb attachment provides a safer experience and allows for shaping your pubic hair. You can use the Manscape 4.0 as a body trimmer or on your facial hair for mild tasks.
Waterproofing
The Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 meets the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards rating of IPX4 and IPX7.
So what does this mean?
- IEC’s IPX 7 means that the trimmer can be submerged in fresh water for 30 minutes without damage.
- IEC’s IPX4 means that the trimmer can resist water splashes from any direction.
So, the Manscaped 4.0 is waterproof and you can use it in the shower with a shaving cream if you’re a fan of wet shaving.
Many users of the Lawn Mower 3.0 complained that the trimmer is not 100% waterproof. They reported that the water got inside the machine and caused damage to the motor and batteries. Yet, the waterproofing of the Manscaped 4.0 is way better.
Travel lock
The Lawn Mower 4.0 from Manscaped features a travel lock to prevent the accidental powering of the shaver. Again, this is one of the popular reported problems of Manscaped The Lawn Mower 3.0.
Now, you can set the device in your travel bag without worrying about reaching your destination with dead batteries. This also makes the trimmer more TSA compliant.
To engage the travel lock, make sure your machine is off and 3 rapid clicks on the power button will activate the lock.
Wireless charging system
The Manscaped newcomer sports a creative dock to wirelessly charge the battery by sending the energy to the trimmer via electromagnetic induction.
Removing the charging socket is a good idea from the safety and convenience perspectives. If you are paranoid about getting the charging socket wet and electric shocks, this is over now.
This feature also enhances the waterproofing of the device and ensures no water gets inside it.
The Type-C USB cable is another awesome feature. This is because it is more efficient and charges faster.
In general, wireless charging is slower than wired charging. So, the battery needs 5 hours to get a full charge compared with only 2 hours with the Lawn Mower 3.0.
It’s not a big deal, just finish your trimming session and place the clipper on the charging dock on your bathroom countertop for the next time. Thanks to the overcharging protection, this became feasible.
LED Spotlight
The below-the-waist trimmer has a 4000k LED Spotlight with a diffuser. The diffuser’s job is to evenly distribute the light.
The LED spotlight is super handy if you have poor lighting in the shower. It lights up your way for more precise cutting around your privates otherwise you might nick yourself in these conditions.
Turn your device ON, and hold down on the multifunctional power button to switch on/off the LED spotlight.
Design
I’m impressed with the new, sleek design of Manscaped 4.0. It’s cooler and more masculine than the Lawn Mower 3.0 design.
It is compact and looks premium with the two-toned black finish, the glossy black, and the matte black. The hot Foil stamped logo is a great bonus.
The Lawnmower 4.0 is more ergonomic and feels different in your hand. It’s so grabby thanks to the edged design.
Manscaped 4.0 package
“It’s a whole new balls game”. This saying is the first thing to see when you open the box.
The Lawn Mower comes in a luxurious package that opens like a book.
You can now see a logo printed on the inner and outer box which isn’t the case with the previous models. Everything is nicely packed and you can use the box to store the razor after you’re done.
Overall, the packaging is great and copes with the branding of the Manscaped Lawn Mower series with the black and gold theme.
Ease of use
The newer Manscaped flagship trimmer is straightforward to use. There’s no serious learning curve if you’re using it for the first time.
Here’s how to use it:
- Give your trimmer a full charge before initial use. During charging, the LED will flash. When it’s done, the light will turn solid. Then, the unit is ready to use for a 90-minute cordless trimming.
- Snap-on the replaceable ceramic blade. Start with the longest comb attachment then gradually move down to the shorter ones.
- Go with the grain with slow and gentle strokes. Make sure the blade teeth are parallel against your skin, not perpendicular.
- When you finish, clean the unit by using the cleaning brush to remove the remaining whiskers. Then, snap off the blade and rinse the shaver under the tap water.
Many cuts and nicks happen due to poor technique. In these cases, the grooming tool is the culprit in the user’s eyes. For this reason, Manscaped included the quick start guide, besides the user guide, to educate the users
This 3- pages guide provides the following information:
- How to charge your unit
- How to use the guards.
- Exact demonstration of how to handle it.
Cost
The trimmer is a little expensive compared to the previous model and other competitors in the male grooming market.
The device is a bit cheaper if you purchased it with the Peak Hygiene Plan. This plan is a monthly subscription-based service that sets you back about $15 every 3 months. It offers blade replacements delivered to your home every 3 months and a Platinum warranty (lifetime warranty). Also, you can try 2 new products for free with every shipment.
The replacement blades cost about $20 a pop and you can order them from the official website. Manscaped recommends changing the blade every 3-6 months for hygiene purposes.
Yet, my advice is to not replace your blades until they get dull.
Here’s how to sanitize your blades to save some extra bucks.
- Buy a bottle of Barbicide disinfectant ( the bottle that you see in every barbershop).
- Put some of the disinfectant in a cup.
- Soak the blade in the cup for 10 minutes.
- Let it dry over the night and you’re golden.
Or you can follow the CDC guidelines for sterilizing and disinfecting metal and plastic objects.
Warranty & Availability
Manscaped offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
In the US and Canada, you can find the new Manscaped product on Amazon, Target, and Best Buy. Yet, it’s not officially launched in Uk and Europe.
Customer reviews
Here are some examples of customer reviews picked from different retailers.
This thing will mow down and beatify any unruly patch. The Lawn Mower 4.0 works great. No nicks, no cuts, no dead batteries. Take it in the shower and come out clean and smooth. If you have a Sasquatch to keep at bay I highly recommend you put the Lawn Mover in your arsenal.
Here’s another review.
This provides a very mild and safe, but inefficient, shave. If you value safety over your time, then this is a good purchase. If you are well accustomed to shaving your body, you may be annoyed at the multiple passes and shorter strokes that you’ll need to do with this razor versus competitors.
Manscaped 4.0 Alternatives
If you are unable to pull the trigger on buying the Lawn Mower 4.0. Here are some groin trimmers and body groomers that might satisfy your needs.
The Meridian trimmer is the main competitor (besides the Mangroomer trimmers) of the Manscaped trimmers. It delivered superior performance compared to the Lawn Mower 3.0.
The Meridian below-the-belt trimmer is on par with the Lawn Mower 4.0. Yet, the Meridian is a bit safer and is also cheaper.
Check my detailed review for the Meridian trimmer for more info.
If you are searching for a body trimmer and shaver, the Philips Norelco Bodygroom will fit the bill.
When it comes to the Manscaped vs Philips Norelco Bodygroom, the Philips Norelco body trimmer comes with 5 attachments while the Manscaped 4.o has only 2.
The Bodygroom trimmer has a self-sharpening blade so, you don’t need to replace the blades as Manscaped recommends.
While the Bodygroom’s battery lasts for 80 minutes, the Manscaped 4.0 battery lasts for 90 minutes
Yet, the Manscaped 4.0 is superior in the quietness level.
The Philips Bodygroom is an all-around shaver that can work efficiently all over your body including your sensitive areas.
This trimmer is a diamond in the rough. I stumbled on this gem while I was lurking on Amazon. It has awesome reviews and dirt cheap. It almost has the same features that Manscaped 4.0 has at half price.
I tried this groin trimmer and I will write a full review about it. It’s extremely smooth and comfortable. It’s my choice for Men with a tight budget.
The only downside is that its initial quality is average. But, it’s still an excellent deal for the price.
Final Verdict: Is Lawn Mower 4.0 worth it?
I find that Manscaped 4.0 solved most of the convenience and durability issues.
Yet, the core concept of being a safe razor for balls doesn’t have any serious improvements. I think there is a huge room for enhancement to be done in the blades and motor to become a real nick-free trimmer.
Don’t get me wrong, it is a good safe trimmer, but it has the potential to become the safest pubic trimmer.
Overall, the Lawn Mower 4.0 is a good purchase, yet a little overpriced.

More Grooming coverage
I’m really passionate about shaving and grooming. I shave my friends’ hair as a hobby and totally enjoying my time writing about shavers and razors. My main job? Ok, I’m a pharmacist!
